Soil Forum approaches the evolution of conservationist practices
The 20th Expodireto Cotrijal hosted, on this Tuesday (12th), the 4th edition of the State Forum of Soil and Water Conservation. The event counted with lectures and tributes to producers and technicians who develop conservationist practices which have resulted in an increase of productivity.
The event started with the presentation of the professor of the Agronomy Faculty of UFRGS, Pedro Selbach, about handlings for productive soils and biological processes. The specialist listed the several benefits of the cover cultivation, which proportionate improvements in the soil structure, an increase in fertility and the handling of pests. “In large extensions we must have an adequate handling, with the right plant succession and the contribution of organic compounds from different plant species”, states Selbach.
The professor of the Agronomy Faculty from UPF, Pedro Escosteguy, talked about liming, phosphorus and organic material, suggesting to the producers the realization of a detailed soil analysis.
Escosteguy divided in five parts the process of soil fertility, starting with the chemical and physical correction; application of a system of cultures with conservationist practices; maintenance of the fertility, analysis of the soil profile; and the crop rotation. “With the continuation of the system, it is important to monitor the soil, after four or five years from the first liming, and make an analysis the most detailed possible”, alerted Escosteguy.
The professor of the Agronomy Faculty of UFSM, Jean Minella, approached the water handling in relation to weather constraints, such as, for example, the water deficit. He presented a monitoring study of acclivities in Júlio de Castilhos, where it was used the terrace technique in soybean plantations. The purpose was of maximizing the water infiltration and storage in the soil, besides correcting the retreat and excess of water.
In the observed place occurred a rainfall of 667 mm, with a storage efficiency in the terrace area of 89 mm. The plantations with the system presented a productivity of 4,550 kg/ha, while the plantations without the terrace technique had a productivity of 4,022 kg/ha.
“Today we have climatic events with a volume intensity much beyond the handling of soil or plant, so we must learn and adapt ourselves to these extreme events. The soils are capable of storing large quantities of water, especially here in this region”, says the professor.
The last presentation was the one of the rural producer Marcos Fridich, from Ajuricaba. In the crop of 2017/2018, he registered a productivity of about 5,178 kg/ha of soybean, while in the corn crop 2018/2019 the productivity was of 11,760 kg/ha.
“Cover plants are not charges, they are investments”, commented the producer, who has two cycles of cover plants in the soybean plantation.
Crowded auditorium
The central auditorium of Expodireto remained crowded during all the event, which was concluded with tributes to five producers and soil conservationist technicians (check below). The forum was accompanied by the head of office of the State Department of Agriculture, Erli Teixeira, who was very excited with the seminar.
“We need to congratulate the producers who have joined the program and reopened their properties to the technicians from Emater, because with that the producers can only have benefits with the productivity increase. The Forum is a success which has been acclaimed and it has to be continued”, said Teixeira.
The forum was organized by the management group of the State Program of Soil and Water Conservation, coordinated by the State Department of Agriculture.
